On Monday morning, a crew from Regional Environmental Demolition (R.E.D.) tore down 744, 746 and 748 Center St. - the sites of an early morning fire on Nov. 30 that shuttered The Vintage Barber, Soully Created and Sue's Frame of Mind. A second-floor dwelling was torn down, too.

In one of the last acts in Congress 2022, the U.S. House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved the National Heritage Area Act (S. 1942) by a bipartisan vote of 326-95. Days earlier, the Senate passed the same bill without opposition. President Biden signed the legislation on Jan. 5, 2023.

The Town of Porter opened 2023 with its reorganizational session Tuesday, where a number of resolutions and routine procedural items were approved, setting the stage for operations in the coming year. Included were appointments, the town's holiday and standard workday schedules, and the naming of officials to various positions/duties.

New this school year, the "Gallery Project" course allows students to design exhibitions and programming for Lew-Port's new Level Art Gallery. Students are currently preparing an exhibition about Artpark. Each student is researching a specific aspect of Artpark after learning about the park's history through reading, viewing an artist-created documentary, and participating in a guided tour of the park led by regional curator Albert Chao.

Mount St. Mary's Hospital (MSMH) welcomed the providers from UBMD Emergency Medicine to the emergency department on Jan. 1, along with the medical team from Buffalo-Niagara Hospitalists, who will manage inpatient care at the hospital. These two groups are also slated to facilitate both inpatient care and emergency care at the new Lockport Memorial Campus of Mount St. Mary's Hospital when it opens later in 2023.

Early Saturday morning, the Niagara Falls Fire Department was called out to a structure fire at 431 20th St., around 2:30 a.m. Crews arrived on scene to find heavy flames coming from the building.

Niagara Falls Police have arrested a suspect in the homicide that occurred on the morning of Jan. 1 in the 2200 block of LaSalle Avenue. The suspect is charged with one count of murder in the second degree and will be arraigned in Niagara Falls City Court on Tuesday, Jan. 3.

Projects highlighted with this year's awards include a community-led establishment of a historic district in Chautauqua County, transformational design of historic garden space in Westchester County, and the completed restoration of a historic pier in New York City.

On Sunday morning, the Niagara County Sheriff's Office announced, "Effective immediately the travel ban for Niagara County has been lifted. A travel advisory will remain in place at this time. A travel advisory is also in place for the City of Lockport, City of Niagara Falls and the City of North Tonawanda."

On Saturday night, the Office of City of Niagara Falls Mayor Robert Restaino stated, "Unfortunately, the prolonged extent of the storm has created conditions that remain unsafe for driving. Our crews will be out throughout the night working to clear roads. The traffic ban will continue into Christmas Day. While we know this impacts religious services, it is important to remain safe."

On Friday afternoon, the Niagara County Sheriff's Office announced, "Niagara County has declared a state of emergency due to the severe weather conditions that are impacting travel and safety. Effective 2 p.m., Niagara County will be upgrading the travel advisory to a full travel ban until further notice."

The Niagara Falls Heritage Gateways project, which is comprised of five public gateway features intended to stimulate reinvestment in Niagara Falls, will move forward. In addition, New York State Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation has approved an agreement authorizing the Aquarium of Niagara to manage operations at the currently closed Niagara Gorge Discovery Center. Construction will now start on transforming the Niagara Gorge Discovery Center into Great Lakes 360 - an "exciting new space for Great Lakes-focused exhibits."
