Niagara County residents urged to take precautions as unhealthy air quality continues

Today's weather forecast predicts an unhealthy air quality for Western New York and Niagara County. The Niagara County Department of Health (NCDOH) recommends that all residents take precautions to reduce health risks associated with the ongoing unhealthy air quality. Residents should remain inside as much as possible, with doors and windows closed, and use an air purifier or air conditioner with a high-efficiency filter.

Lake trout research underway on Lake Ontario

Lake trout research underway on Lake Ontario is part of the U.S.-Canada Cooperative Science and Monitoring Initiative (CSMI) field year on the lake. Research collecting data on lake trout movement using acoustic telemetry tags is being led by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) in collaboration with the U.S. Geologic Survey (USGS), New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Fisheries, with outreach assistance from New York Sea Grant (NYSG).
Youngstown Lions volunteer at pop-up eyeglass clinic

Seven members of the Youngstown Lions Club recently volunteered their Saturday to serve and help with up to 30 Lions from other Western New York clubs at the Lions pop-up eyeglass clinic held at the Community Health Center in Niagara Falls. This successful community event, organized by Lion Rob Nichols and sponsored by the Niagara Falls Community Lions, required no age limit, ID, or proof of income.

Motor-vehicle crash in Porter

On Saturday, June 3, the Niagara County Sheriff's Office communications center received a 911 call reporting a single motor-vehicle accident into a barn in the area of Braley Road and Dickersonville Road in the Town of Porter. Before deputies arrived on scene, the single male occupant was able to extricate himself from the vehicle and walk out of the semi-demolished barn.

Retired Lewiston-Porter teacher John Loss has written a book on 13 Niagara Falls residents who experienced being homeless many times in their lives. He said the idea for "...Not Always Homeless" came to him as he would see homeless individuals in and around his hometown of Niagara Falls. Loss knew they were not always homeless, so he decided to write a book about them.
Niagara County Civil Service continues to streamline hiring process with continuous recruitment

Niagara County Legislator David Godfrey announced the county's personnel office is implementing decentralized continuous recruitment exams to make it easier for residents seeking employment to apply for certain county positions throughout the year. On May 30, at 3:48 a.m. the Niagara County Sheriff's Office communications division received a 911 call reporting a residential structure fire in Sanborn. It was reported that an attached garage was on fire and the home was believed to be occupied.
