Lake trout research underway on Lake Ontario is part of the U.S.-Canada Cooperative Science and Monitoring Initiative (CSMI) field year on the lake. Research collecting data on lake trout movement using acoustic telemetry tags is being led by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) in collaboration with the U.S. Geologic Survey (USGS), New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Fisheries, with outreach assistance from New York Sea Grant (NYSG).

Seven members of the Youngstown Lions Club recently volunteered their Saturday to serve and help with up to 30 Lions from other Western New York clubs at the Lions pop-up eyeglass clinic held at the Community Health Center in Niagara Falls. This successful community event, organized by Lion Rob Nichols and sponsored by the Niagara Falls Community Lions, required no age limit, ID, or proof of income.

The Hy-Tech Concrete DIRTcar Sportsman, Kevin's Carpet Cleaning Novice Sportsman, and the Sunflowers of Sanborn Mini Stocks will also be in action.

On Saturday, June 3, the Niagara County Sheriff's Office communications center received a 911 call reporting a single motor-vehicle accident into a barn in the area of Braley Road and Dickersonville Road in the Town of Porter. Before deputies arrived on scene, the single male occupant was able to extricate himself from the vehicle and walk out of the semi-demolished barn.

The new Lewiston Artisan Farmers Market's season had a smooth start, organizer Jamie Symmonds of Willow Consulting said Saturday. Crowds were out in full force stocking up on fresh produce, flowers, honey and sweet treats, while sampling breakfast sandwiches, listening to live music, and interacting with Nickel City Canine Rescue dogs.

On Saturday morning, officials of the new Runway Bay in the Town of Porter held a ribbon-cutting for the River Region's latest housing offering. Located just off of Lower River Road at Dockside Drive, the subdivision includes 23 lots with a small, private access marina located across on the lower river.

Retired Lewiston-Porter teacher John Loss has written a book on 13 Niagara Falls residents who experienced being homeless many times in their lives. He said the idea for "...Not Always Homeless" came to him as he would see homeless individuals in and around his hometown of Niagara Falls. Loss knew they were not always homeless, so he decided to write a book about them.

The KeyBank Foundation has awarded a $25,000 capacity-building grant to Niagara Area Habitat for Humanity. At 1:37 a.m. Wednesday, the Niagara Falls Fire Department responded to a fire at 7211 Stephenson Ave. Upon arrival, fire personnel found heavy fire coming out of the windows on the right side and in the rear of the building. Upon investigation, it was determined the cause of the fire was not accidental.
