Rainy weather and blustery winds failed the dampen the Irish spirit, as St. Patrick’s Day celebrations played out throughout Buffalo-Niagara this past weekend.
Events included the “world’s shortest parade” and related festivities Friday in Niagara Falls, courtesy of the Ancient Order of Hibernians; the Old Neighborhood parade on Saturday morning in Buffalo’s Old First Ward; community celebrations Saturday afternoon in Youngstown; and Buffalo’s traditional St. Patrick’s Day parade down Delaware Avenue on Sunday.
Up in Youngstown, a little rain didn't stop the 13th annual O'Riordan St. Patrick's Day parade. Umbrellas were the order of the day, as a large crowd had an enjoyable time watching the event along Main Street. There was candy for the kids, soldiers from Old Fort Niagara, the MacKenzie Highlanders marching and playing bagpipes, Irish Wolfhounds, and a couple of shopping cart floats – keeping the original theme of this parade alive and well. The parade concluded with soldiers from Old Fort Niagara firing a musket volley in honor of the Youngstown mayor Neil Riordan.
