With the Village of Lewiston’s Department of Public Works recently without its two snowblowers, Mayor Anne Welch offered a reminder to business owners that it is their responsibility to maintain walkways surrounding their units.

“People do call and say, ‘This street, Center Street, has got snow or ice.’ First of all, the snowblower doesn’t pick up the ice. And with our weather – with the rain and then the freezing – it’s icy under the snow. There’s nothing we can do about that,” Welch said at Monday’s municipal work session.

“The businesses are supposed to clear in front of their (storefront).

“Our guys do the best they can. My best advice to these people is, when it’s this bad with the conditions, don’t walk. Don’t come out and walk in these conditions, because you’re just asking to fall and get hurt.”

“As far as sidewalk maintenance goes, we are working on it diligently,” DPW Superintendent Anthony Mang noted. “I hope to have everything back up and running by Friday.”

He added, “Despite the fact that sometimes the village isn't able to clear the sidewalks, the village code does state that businesses are responsible for their sidewalks in front of their businesses.”

“We do it as a courtesy,” Deputy Mayor Vic Eydt said of the DPW clearing Center Street sidewalks.

“We do it when we can get to it,” Mang said. “Obviously, with (the snowblowers) being down, it's going to be some time before you see us out and about again.”
