On Wednesday night, the police barricades outside of the Lewiston Post Office were removed, people were using the external mailboxes, and the doors to the outer lobby were open.
The post office was closed for most of the day, as first responders investigated a mysterious odor. Once the smell was determined to be caused by a non-toxic aerosol irritant, hazardous material teams left and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service took charge of the site. The federal agency was set to survey the office and take responsibility for its cleanup.
Normal mail delivery and pickup is expected to resume on Thursday, though there is no confirmation at this time.
The Lewiston Post Office is located at 150 S. Eighth St.
