They say no two snowflakes are the same.
I guess the same could be said for Lewiston salons.
While I haven't collected snowflakes to judge uniqueness, I have recently traversed the local skincare circuit and found surprising levels of individuality.
Take Afterglow Spa & Hair Studio, for example.
The South Ninth Street salon specializes in relaxation.
"I'm kind of into more of, like, relaxing while you get benefits," Afterglow owner Krista Tedesco said. "I don't like to necessarily do things that I know are going to be painful or really aggressive treatments. I like to keep it a little bit more holistic."

From the waiting room to the pictures painted on the walls, the pedicure room to the facial area, the massage table to the homemade lavender bath salts, it's clear one could settle into any corner of Afterglow and just let the care and worry of the world melt away.
Client Mary-Jo Farrell said, "I think Krista does a great job! She, Jess and Bridgit work very hard to ensure their clients an enjoyable experience at Afterglow. Perhaps because of its location in an older home, the salon itself has a certain charm about it, as well as a very calm and relaxing feel. Whether you are there for a hair appointment or to enjoy a mani/pedi, facial or massage, the ladies do everything they can to make the spa experience as pleasant as possible."
Mary Jo Neri worked with Mara Palermo at D'Amore Salon and Day Spa.
"After Mara Palermo left Lewiston, I didn't know where I would go for services, so I decided to try Afterglow," Neri said. "I had heard wonderful things about Krista Tedesco. I know how great her parents are, so I felt like it was a good choice. From the moment I walked in, I felt right at home. The one-on-one service you get is wonderful. It's a warm, welcoming salon with great people running it."
Tedesco is a licensed esthetician and nail technician. Her staff includes LAKMÈ educator, hairstylist and nail specialist Jessica Bugay.
"My daughter and I have been clients of Krista and Jess for many years now, following them to the new salon where we have both been very happy," Farrell said. "I have also recommended Afterglow to several friends and family and they, too, have been extremely pleased with their experience."
Cosmetologist Bridgit Sherman recently joined the Afterglow ranks, allowing the business to expand its hours of operation. Tedesco has plans to revamp her hair studio, too.
"Krista has a lot of good business sense," Neri said. "A lot of our discussions are based on my past experience as business manager for D'Amore. Krista understands so much for a young entrepreneur, obviously from her parents' success. She listens and takes care of her customers with a great personality. I always leave there happy. You cannot say that for too many businesses, local or not.
"It takes a good mix to run a business, and Krista has it all. I have recommended her salon to many of my friends, who are just as pleased as I am."
Afterglow will celebrate its first birthday May 1.
"I knew owning my own business was something that I always wanted to do," Tedesco said. "The opportunity to open my own salon presented itself, so I took the opportunity. The first year has taught me a lot, but I had a very specific vision of what I thought a spa atmosphere should be, and a salon atmosphere should be. And I think I've done a good job achieving it.
"When people come in here, they usually say, like, 'Oh, my god, this is so quaint and relaxing.' And then, after they have their services done, they're usually really pleased.
"I feel like it's good to have those big-town services with a small-town feel."
Farrell said, "I think Afterglow salon and spa is a perfect fit for Lewiston, and I would be willing to bet they will be successful there for many years to come."
Afterglow is located at 210 S. Ninth St. The business is open Monday through Saturday. Call 716-405-7178 for an appointment or visit http://www.afterglowspaandhair.com.
