Left of Center with Joshua Maloni
By now, readers know Semir Huzmeli is gifted with a pair of scissors.
As it turns out, he's pretty good with a paintbrush, too, as onlookers have noticed in recent weeks.
"I (did) it all by myself," he said. "I am good by hair, also by hand - handyman.
"I'm better with the hair, though. But it's the same art, actually."
The owner of Lewiston's Salon Semir has spent a large portion of his first year refurbishing and renovating the former antique store and insurance office.
People have noticed.
"First year was very good," he said. "When we open it was in November; a little bit cold and snowy. We got good business to start. Now, I'm glad we are doing well."
Salon Semir pegs itself as a "High-end salon with low-end prices." Huzmeli said, "We offer haircut, colors, highlights - everything a salon (does), I am doing the same thing. Except not the spa. We are more like a studio - a hair studio. We have little manicure and pedicure, but not facial."
He's contemplated expanding, but, "For now, we are going to stick with what we have," Huzmeli said. "We are happy with what we have right now."
"I've been in Lewiston back and forth for 15 years," he added.
"My family here is happy," Huzmeli said. "It's very good. I like Lewiston."
In addition to its complete hair-care offerings, Salon Semir serves as a "Locks of Love" program participant.
"People who want to donate their hair (for cancer patients), I cut (their hair) for free, style it for free," Huzmeli said.
Salon Semir is located at 421 Center St. Hours of operation are 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Call 716-754-2090 to make an appointment or visit http://salonsemir.wix.com/salonsemir for more information.
