"Best for Food" judges Mike Shubic and Brian Cox are in for a treat when they visit Lewiston on Wednesday. The "Road Bros," one of Rand McNally/USA Today's Best Small Towns in America travel teams, will receive a police escort down Center Street to a gathering at The Silo Restaurant at 115 N. Water St. There, they'll find a "rousing welcome" from residents, Lee Simonson told Village of Lewiston trustees on Monday.
Simonson, who heads the group of local volunteers campaigning for Lewiston in the national contest, said the "Road Bros" will receive a guided tour of village restaurants on Thursday, as well as a musical performance by the Lewiston Choraleers, and a ride with Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours.
"We have a number of things planned," he said. "It's going to be a lot of fun."
To win the contest, Lewiston has to accomplish three things: net the most online votes (check), receive significant and detailed food/restaurant reviews (check), and win over the "Best for Food" judges, the "Road Bros."
If Lewiston accomplishes this feat, Simonson said the municipality will be listed as "Best for Food" on Rand McNally's 2014 print and GPS maps. This, he told the Village Board, would result in "hundreds of thousands of dollars in free publicity."
"You couldn't buy this kind of publicity or promotion," Simonson said.
The Village of Lewiston has 30 eateries, or "about one restaurant for every 100 people," he said.
"We are a small community," Mayor Terry Collesano noted, "but a community with a big heart."
