More to come

Mount St. Mary's Hospital is celebrating the nearing of completion of more than $10 million in diagnostic equipment and infrastructure improvements made at the facility over the past three years.

And starting this month, Mount St. Mary's is beginning an investment that will total more than $2.4 million for the implementation of an electronic medical record that will be needed to meet the requirements of the federal Healthcare Reform's Affordable Care Act, while enhancing patient care.

Hospital President and CEO Judith Maness said the investments would add to the overall life of the hospital building and enhance comfort for patients and employees.

"These investments in our hospital's infrastructure and building systems are critical to our sustainability and efficiency," she said. "These types of investments are often postponed due to clinical or information technology needs. We are fortunate to have a strong sponsor in Ascension Health, which helps to keep us up with state-of-the-art technology and local elected officials who recognize the importance of this facility to the community."

Improvements completed in recent months include:

•$1.4 million cooling tower replacement.

•$1.4 million for the replacement of the main air handlers. This included installation of four new air handlers with a direct digital control building management system and a new motor control center for electrical distribution. This replaces 1964 original equipment and technology.

•$1.34 million to provide full heating and cooling in each individual room of the main facility tower for the convenience of patients.

•$300,000 for the installation of new windows, replacing the 1965 single pane non-insulated glass throughout the main tower.

•$350,000 to create OB/GYN physician office suites on the second floor.

•$275,000 for a third gastrointestinal (GI) procedure room to accommodate added workload.

Maness said much of the work is the result of an energy efficiency study conducted for Mount St. Mary's by Pres Energy, a consultant for the New York Power Authority. Once priority projects were identified, State Sen. George Maziarz was instrumental in securing financial assistance.

"We could not do this on our own and thanks goes to Senator Maziarz, the Power Authority and others who stepped forward to ensure that this facility is safe and efficient for our patients," Maness said.

In addition to the infrastructure improvements, Maness said the hospital is also celebrating capital improvements that have been initiated in clinical and business areas over the past three years.
