Annual friendly-competition helps to alleviate food scarcity with Connect55+ residents donating to local food pantries in Northeast & Midwest

Connect55+ Press Release & Photos

Residents of Connect55+ communities came together in February for the annual Connect55+ can competition, a longstanding tradition organized by the Calamar Foundation to support local food banks and charities. This year, 22 communities participated, contributing an impressive 7,903 cans, all of which will be donated to 22 food banks and charities chosen by the residents in their local communities.

The can competition is an opportunity for our senior citizens to connect with their communities, work together, and help address food insecurity. As part of the event, residents creatively stack and design structures using the donated cans, turning their contributions into eye-catching displays.

“Our residents always go above and beyond to give back, and this year was no exception,” said Gay Molnar, president of the Calamar Foundation. “This competition is a fun and meaningful way for our communities to come together while making a real impact.”

Their corporate staff, located in Wheatfield, voted on the entries, selecting “Daisy Duck” from Connect55+ Bedford as the 2025 winner. Bedford residents collected 2,600 cans, securing the top spot in this year’s competition.

Through this initiative, Connect55+ residents continue to make a difference in the fight against food insecurity, ensuring that local food banks receive the resources they need to support those in need. The Calamar Foundation and Connect55+ are proud to organize this annual event and look forward to seeing the continued generosity and creativity of residents in the years to come.
