Press Release

The Women’s Respite Program will offer a weekend for women with cancer on April 11-13. Programming will take place at the Center of Renewal on the Stella Niagara campus on Lower River Road between Lewiston and Youngstown.

Organizers said, “You qualify to apply for the weekend if you have received a cancer diagnosis and are undergoing treatment, or have recently completed treatment and are physically able to walk up and down hallways to meeting places.”

They explained, “We know the cancer journey is exhausting, so this weekend is for you. We provide a modest, private room; all meals; and opportunities for rest and relaxation, discussions with other women, massage, reiki, art activities, quiet reflection, and walking the beautiful grounds. All activities are optional if you want only to sleep.”

As space is fixed, priority will be given to women who have a low income, or who are currently raising children, or who have a more recent experience of cancer. Some help with transportation may be available.

This application can be filled out and submitted by March 25. Organizers will contact interested applicants after that date with the status of their application. For more information, or to obtain a form another way, call the program coordinator at 716-877-6896.

The Respite Program covers the cost of the weekend, but there is a suggested donation of $20.

The nonprofit Women's Respite Program is a part of the Francis Center. It began more than 35 years ago, providing weekend programs to women experiencing various stressors.

In addition to the annual weekend for women with cancer, it also hosts mothers with low income, grandmothers raising their grandchildren, and women with children on the autism spectrum.
