In February 1957, seven employees of the Harrison Radiator Division of General Motors deposited $5 each along with a signed a letter creating Unit #1 Federal Credit Union. They had a simple mission: help people achieve their financial dreams.

Sixty years later, Unit #1 is known as Cornerstone Community Federal Credit Union. CCFCU has more than 49,000 members with five branch locations.

While CCFCU has grown to be the largest credit union in Niagara County, its mission remains the same. David M. Nemi, chairman of CCFCU'S board of directors, puts it succinctly: "Cornerstone exists for just one reason: people. Our members are the driving force behind Cornerstone's 60 years of success."

On May 1, CCFCU will kick off a yearlong celebration through a brand story campaign that will feature the credit union's rich history as well as in-depth feature stories of credit union members.

Ann M. Hood, Cornerstone's president and CEO, said the celebration as an opportunity to not only share the organization's humble beginnings, but also a platform to express gratitude to members.

"Over the years, we've established a reputation of personal service and providing the best financial value possible," Hood said. "We are thankful to those who have put their faith in us and allowed us to help them achieve their dreams."

The brand storytelling campaign includes a commemorative video, a special edition annual report, billboards, web images, and radio and television commercials.

Both Hood and Nemi point out the featured stories share how CCFCU has been a lifelong and, in some cases, third-generation financial partner with its customers.

"The member stories we're highlighting this year - and the success stories of all of our members - are an important part of the credit union's history. We're proud of that history and all that we've helped our members accomplish. We're excited to see what the future holds," Nemi said.
