Tanks being removed at old Gulf station

Work to remove the gas tanks began this week at the vacant gas station on the corner of Whitehaven Road and Grand Island Boulevard.

Town Supervisor Nathan McMurray said that last week he negotiated with NOCO, owners of both the former Gulf station and the NOCO Express across the street, to remove the tanks from the ground. McMurray said in his weekly column (see Page 4) that several Islanders had told him they were afraid the tanks were emitting fumes.

NOCO has also agreed to tear down the sign and paint the building as well, McMurray said.

McMurray said his efforts are part of his goal to clean up the Island's gateways at the north end (the exit near Long Road) and south end (the area near the roundabout), and the center (at Whitehaven and the boulevard).

The broader goal is to improve pedestrian access on Grand Island Boulevard.

"This will lead, over time, to increased property values and a better Island," he said.
