July 9, 1919 - Oct. 13, 2016

Lifelong Grand Island resident Bernice Dinsmore passed away Oct. 13.

Bernice's mother, Agnes Stack, had spent much of every day keeping St. Stephen R.C. Church neat and clean, and Bernice later took this task on as her own. She attended daily mass and took care of whatever needed doing, everything from laundering altar cloths to dusting the entire church to being sure the Sunday collection went to its proper spot.

In 1976, Father Graeber nominated Dinsmore for the Buffalo Diocesan St. Joseph the Worker Award. She was the first from St. Stephen's to win this prestigious award.

Dinsmore served from 2001-03 as president of the Buffalo Council of Catholic Women, and she served in several leadership posts with the BCCW. She was the Elderwood Volunteer of the Year in 2005 for helping with nursing home Mass and taking communion to residents who were bedridden.

In a final act of giving, she has donated her body to the University at Buffalo Medical School.

She was the wife of the late Donald Dinsmore, mother of Peter (Maxine) Dinsmore, Jeanne Marie (Henry) Ensminger, James Dinsmore, Eugene (JoAnne) Dinsmore, Donna (Thomas) Frantz and Edward (Karen Waybright) Dinsmore. She is also survived by 20 grandchildren, 43 great-grandchildren, nine great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by two grandsons and one great-grandson. She was the sister of F. William (Bernadette) Stack of Providence, Rhode Island, Paul (Rita) Stack of Rochester, and the late Edward, John, James, Eugene, Charles, Patrick, Elizabeth and Cecelia.

A memorial mass will be celebrated Monday, Nov. 14, at 10 a.m. at St. Stephen R.C. Church, 2100 Baseline Road, Grand Island.
