The specter of nuclear disaster "close-calls" is terrifying. Speaker Lee Simonson will go beyond the best-known mishaps of the past 70 years to tell of six nuclear incidents that brought this nation and the world to the brink of annihilation.

Simonson will present "Six Times the World Was Saved from Nuclear Armageddon (That You Never Knew About)" at the History Center at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 23.

He is a small business owner and former president of the Historical Association of Lewiston. Simonson served 32 years in the Niagara County Legislature, including as chairman, and has received many awards, including Niagara County Leader of the Year, Lewiston Citizen of the Year, and the National Spirit Award from the U.S. Daughters of 1812.

Donations will be accepted at the program, which includes light refreshments. Call 716-434-7433 for more information.

The Niagara History Center is located at 215 Niagara St., Lockport. It receives grant assistance from the New York State Council on the Arts, with the support of Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.
