Late last year while collecting for Cans For Food, Lewiston resident Angelo Sarkees found a jar full of pennies. Instead of just cashing in the pennies, he decided to have a contest to raise some more money for the local food pantries. For a donation to Cans For Food, the participants could guess how many pennies were in the jar, with the winner receiving the jar of pennies. The contest raised $350 for Cans For Food.
The winner, guessing within a nickel of the $10.13 the jar held, was Robin Faulring of the Orange Cat Coffee Co. She expects to put the pennies into a larger jar and add to the total and continue the contest during the coming year.
Sarkees collected $4,500 for Cans For Food, with another $500 kicked in by Sevenson Environmental Services, for a total of $5,000, which was distributed to the local food pantries this past year.
