After midnight last night at the Academy Awards, Oscar presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway announced "La La Land" won the Best Motion Picture award. As film producers and cast members lined the stage and began offering remarks, a show stagehand came out abruptly and informed them a mistake had occurred: The wrong film was announced; "Moonlight" had actually won the Academy Award.

PricewaterhouseCoopers, the accounting firm responsible for tabulating the Academy Awards ballot votes, issued the following statement overnight:

"We sincerely apologize to 'Moonlight,' 'La La Land,' Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway, and Oscar viewers for the error that was made during the award announcement for Best Picture. The presenters had mistakenly been given the wrong category envelope and when discovered, was immediately corrected. We are currently investigating how this could have happened, and deeply regret that this occurred.

"We appreciate the grace with which the nominees, the Academy, ABC, and Jimmy Kimmel handled the situation."

Beatty was given the Best Actress in a Leading Role envelope, which had a card listing "La La Land" star Emma Stone as the winner. On stage, he said he paused because seeing that card confused him. Dunaway, upon seeing Beatty's reaction, announced "La La Land" as the winner.
