Grand Island Fire Co. Chief Chris Soluri stresses that scene safety has always been a top priority for all firefighting and emergency medical services personnel. While local volunteers do their best to handle any and all emergency incidents, they are also placed in harm's way and require special protection to lessen some of the dangers they face.

Consequently, section 1144a of the New York state vehicle and traffic law requires motorists to slow down, use caution, and move over when encountering any emergency vehicle traveling or parked on the roadway.

Soluri notes that while the vast majority of drivers conscientiously observe the law, there are some who don't. He further notes that within the past week a passing motorist ran into a parked GIFC vehicle, barely missing a medic standing next to an on-scene ambulance. Although this near tragedy could be considered an isolated occurrence, it is a graphic reminder that scene safety can never be taken for granted and will continue to be a major concern for all emergency responders.

Soluri therefore urges all highway users to exercise common sense and law-abiding consideration for GIFC volunteers so that they can safely perform their community protection duties.
