Twenty-year-old Carly Marrs of North Tonawanda, whose vehicle struck and killed two teenagers last summer, was sentenced Feb. 8 to pay a $243 fine for imprudent speed. She was also convicted of unlawful possession of marijuana. However, she was found not guilty for reckless driving, a misdemeanor; and an unspecified violation.

During the early morning of Aug. 20, 2016, Shawnee Road, Melanie J. Aronow, age 18, of Amherst and Quience Harper, age 18, of Lockport, were both hit by Marrs' vehicle while walking on Shawnee Road. Both teenagers died at the scene. A third pedestrian, Quincy Bird, age 20, of Lockport, was also hit and suffered injuries.

At the time of the accident, a party was taking place nearby and several cars were parked on both sides of the road. All three pedestrians were standing near the southbound fog line when they were stuck by Marrs' vehicle, the Niagara County Sheriff's Criminal Division and Accident Investigation Unit determined. The cars parked along the road prevented them from walking or standing off the roadway. The area was dark and there was no road lighting.

Marrs was given roadside sobriety tests and drug recognition tests shortly after the incident. All results showed she was not impaired by alcohol or drugs.

During the inspection of Marrs' vehicle, a pipe that contained marijuana was found. It was also determined that Marrs' vehicle was travelling at or around the 55 mph speed limit at the time of the crash.
