The emergency department of Mount St. Mary's Hospital has been recognized by the Healthcare Association of New York State (HANYS) for its efforts to change procedures to decrease wait times and improve communication with patients.

Recognized as part of HANYS's Pinnacle Award Program for Quality and Patient Safety, the Mount St. Mary's emergency department initiatives have improved patient outcomes and decreased wait times, while "satisfaction scores" have increased.

The initiative focused on serving patients from their point of entry, and meeting with a medical provider as quickly as possible. It also included measures to communicate more rapidly and effectively with patients and family members.

In addition to emergency department staff, the initiative reached all levels of the organization from the CEO, vice president of nursing, ED physicians, medical-surgical units, nurse attendants, environmental services and volunteers.
