Annual event set for June 17 & 18

With the official start to spring right around the corner, preparations for Lewiston GardenFest are now underway. The 12th annual event, presented by the Lewiston Garden Club, is set for Saturday, June 17, and Sunday, June 18, along Center Street in Lewiston. Applications are now being accepted for both vendors and for local residents interested in participating in the open gardens during Lewiston GardenFest.

"Lewiston GardenFest is completely run by volunteers from the local community and Lewiston Garden Club members," said Doreen Albee, chairwoman of the Lewiston GardenFest. "We rely on our vendor partners and Lewiston residents to enhance the offerings and beautification ideas we are able to provide for garden enthusiasts from across Western New York and Southern Ontario throughout the fun-filled weekend. In addition, this is a special year for us as the Lewiston Garden Club is marking 90 years and will celebrate during the 2017 Lewiston GardenFest."

Businesses and vendors who sell items related to gardening, horticulture and the outdoors, including nurseries. Landscapers, garden artists, builders and others are encouraged to apply. Vendor applications are due by May 1, and can be downloaded at www.lewistongardenfest.com. The application fee varies from $125 to $225 based on the size of the vendor display.

Lewiston residents, who are interested in showcasing their own gardens or just a particular section of their yard, are encouraged to be part of this year's open gardens. Festival attendees can view the participating gardens only when the "Open Garden" sign is in place between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. during Lewiston GardenFest weekend. For more information or to download an application, visit www.lewistongardenfest.com. The deadline to participate is also May 1.

Free to attend, Lewiston GardenFest includes vendors featuring flowers, plants and garden art to beautify one's outdoor space. Speakers each day demonstrate new and different techniques to enhance one's gardens, and master gardeners are on hand to answer questions throughout the weekend. In addition to free open gardens, attendees can also participate in a container garden contest for prizes.

All proceeds from GardenFest are used by the Lewiston Garden Club for civic beautification and scholarships. For more, visit www.lewistongardenfest.com.
