The Buffalo Sabres announced the team will once again host more than 2,500 local students as part of the NHL and NHLPA Future Goals program at KeyBank Center on Jan. 19. Future Goals focuses on using the game of hockey to teach science, technology engineering and mathematics.

"The Future Goals open practice allows us the opportunity to provide an interactive hockey and STEM experience for thousands of students who are using the program in their schools," said Sabres Director of Community Relations Rich Jureller. "We are very excited to welcome them to KeyBank Center for a great day of learning and hockey."

Students will hear from a panel composed of former NHL players Kevyn Adams and Martin Biron, broadcaster Brian Duff, Equipment Manager Dave Williams and Director of Game Presentation Kelsey Schneider, as they discuss how hockey teaches fundamental STEM concepts. The students will then have a chance to watch the Sabres practice from the arena bowl.

Future Goals is a partnership between the Buffalo Sabres, the National Hockey League and the National Hockey League Players' Association. Through the Future Goals digital learning initiative, students will build their STEM skills using the fast-paced game of hockey as a learning vehicle. The program is committed to sparking student interest in STEM topics and helping students become college-ready, career-ready and life-ready.

The program, which was launched in 2014, consists of more than 6,500 students from 96 schools in Western New York that utilize the Future Goals curriculum or are slated to incorporate the Future Goals program.

The Future Goals program is a free program that is open to all middle school teachers and students throughout Western New York. To learn more, teachers can contact Katie O'Donnell at [email protected].
