Grand Island business donates to Islanders' Ride for Roswell

When Sam and Kim Aceti planned a wine tasting and celebration for their business's 10-year anniversary on Grand Island, they wanted to use the event as an opportunity to give back.

While the Aceti's Wine & Spirits anniversary event was free and open to the public, invitations and advertisements encouraged attendees to make a donation to Team Luke of Ride for Roswell. In total, $1,740 was collected the day of the event.

Team Luke was founded in 2014 after 7-year-old Luke Gworek of Grand Island was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in December of 2013. The Gworek family organized Team Luke to raise money for cancer research and patient care programs at Roswell Park Cancer Institute.

Kim and Sam Aceti presented a check for $1,740 to Team Luke's Ride for Roswell on Tuesday, Dec. 20, at their store on Grand Island Boulevard. The money was raised from donations made by party attendees, staff members and long-time customers.

"We've been supporting Team Luke since 2014, because Luke - and the entire Gworek family - are a part of our community," said Sam Aceti. "And our community comes together when a neighbor needs it."

While Luke's chemo treatments ended in April of this year, he will still require monthly visits and aftercare for the remainder of his life. Funds raised through the Ride for Roswell support the research and patient care programs that benefit Luke and the 31,000 other patients who turn to Roswell Park for treatment. Donations are further used to improve the patient and family experience, support new clinical treatments and procedures, and educate the next generation of cancer scientists and clinicians.
