The Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum has announced its spring woodcarving class schedule. Both beginner and intermediate/advanced woodcarving classes will be offered Saturdays, March 4-25.

•Beginner woodcarving classes will run from 9 a.m. to noon. These classes are aimed towards students who have no carving experience or are self-taught carvers who lack specialized technical training. This series of classes introduces tool safety, sharpening, material selection, and finishing. Participants will work on a different project each week, including carving in the round and relief carving. The cost is $100 ($95 for carousel society members).

The fee includes instruction, a tool kit to keep, and materials for projects. Students should bring a pencil to class.

•Intermediate/advanced woodcarving classes will be held from 1-4 p.m.

The project will be acanthus leaf carving. A non-slip mat and c-clamps are required. A pattern and wood will be supplied. Students must bring their own tools, including a ruler, pencil, two 6-inch-bench clamps and a non-slip pad. Students may supply their own pattern and wood and receive guidance on their project, as well. The cost is $85 ($80 for carousel society members). Admission to this class is with instructor approval only.

All classes are taught by Doug Bathke, a museum trustee who has been carving for 54 years and teaching for 45 years.

Classes are part of a series and cannot be taken individually. Maximum enrollment is 12 students for the beginner class and 10 for the intermediate/advanced class. All classes are for those ages 18 and older.

Fees are nonrefundable after the first class. Registration and pre-payment for classes are required by Wednesday March 1. To register, call 716-693-1885.
