Family and friends will have a chance to participate in a slew of activities at the second annual Wheatfield Winterfest, to be held from 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, at the Wheatfield Town Hall Complex.

"We plan to offer a variety of events both in the Community Center and at the Youth Center along with outdoor activities," said Wheatfield Recreation Director Mike Ranalli, a chairperson of Winterfest.

A maple candy-making station and Humvee tours will be offered outdoors.

Weather dependent, the event will also feature several winter activities, including a snowman-building contest, ice skating, a sled hill, snow painting and snowshoeing.

Ranalli said, last year, "The weather was in the upper-30s and no snow. ... Although that's a great late-January day, it wasn't conducive for our outdoor activities."

Even without snow, Ranalli said, "We have plenty to do indoors in the event Mother Nature doesn't cooperate with us."

Inside the Youth Center, visitors will find a host of children's activities, including a bounce house, Aquarium of Niagara outreach program offerings, a movie showing, crafts and games, including Nerf games.

Activities offered for adults at the Community Center include live music by Kathy Lynn and the Playboys, wine tasting and pairings, a chowder sale offered by St. Johnsburg Fire Co., refreshments by the Wheatfield Lions Club and a craft sale.

Winterfest chairperson Heather Zeller said, "I think this event gives residents an opportunity to come out as a family and enjoy time together without the everyday distractions. There are activities that families can choose to do together."

She added, "Although this is a family event, there are also activities for all ages to enjoy whether they attend with kids or without."

Overall, Ranalli said, "Our goals (for the event) are simple: community participation and enjoyment while Old Man Winter makes (his) way through Wheatfield."

He added, "It's a way for us as a community to see 2017 as a fresh start with a clean slate with the hopes to sustain this momentum into the spring and summer."
