As part of its commitment to strengthening communities, YMCA Buffalo Niagara is teaming up with the Food Bank of Western New York for the fifth straight year to help fight hunger this holiday season.

Catherine Shick, public and community relations coordinator for the Food Bank of Western New York, said the Food Bank typically sees a rise in need during the holiday season. She said, "As the cold weather sets in, many of our neighbors in need have to choose between heating their homes or purchasing food for their families. We are grateful to the YMCA and the Western New York community for helping us fight hunger one day at a time. The food collected through this wonderful drive helps feed hungry families throughout the holidays and into the new year."

In addition to hosting collection bins throughout the month of November at all YMCA Buffalo Niagara branches and its association office, the Y is also asking all YMCA Turkey Trot participants to bring nonperishable donations with them to packet pick-up at the Independent Health Family Branch YMCA (150 Tech Drive, Amherst), Nov. 21-23. Donation bins will also be available on race day, Nov. 24, at the Delaware YMCA, the start line, and at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center.

"Last year, thanks to the community's generous support, local Y's collected 4,605 pounds of nonperishable items, which helped provide over 3,800 meals to area families," said Geoffrey Falkner, YMCA communications director. "We are thrilled to have the opportunity to support our community in partnership with the Food Bank of Western New York once again this year. It is our hope that the community will come out in force to help us exceed last year's donation totals and support more families."
