NCBA to hold course on residential code changes

The Niagara County Builders Association will hold a residential code changes course from 1-5 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29, at Irr Supply (second floor training room), 908 Niagara Falls Blvd., North Tonawanda.

The course will focus on the major changes to the 2016 New York State Supplemental Residential Code that will impact the designing and building of residential construction. It is geared toward builders, trade contractors, architects, engineers and code officials. The new codes will be mandatory starting Oct. 3.

The course's objectives include the following:

•Understand the major changes between the 2009 and the 2016 residential code;

•Create an awareness of changes that will have a significant impact on residential construction; and

•Address the changes in both the IRC and energy code.

Some of the major changes to be presented include:

•Emergency escape required for all habitable basements and attics;

•All floor assemblies to be fire resistant rated (including basements);

•Mandatory blower door testing to achieve 3 ACH50;

•New design values for SYP, Douglas-fir and others;

•Several new deck requirements; and

•Whole-house mechanical ventilation, now required.

The course fee is $95 for NCBA members and $145 for nonmembers.

2016 New York State Supplemental Residential Code ($130 value) is included with each registration. If you already have the IRC book, training registration is $50 per person for members or $100 for nonmembers.

The registration deadline is Friday, Sept. 23.
