It's that time of year again. Autumn has fallen upon Western New York, and with it comes a host of seasonal activities and events.

The Autumn Festival in Sanborn, presented by the Sanborn Business and Professional Association, will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 1 and 2 at the Sanborn Lewiston Farm Museum, 2660 Saunders Settlement Road.

Although the free community festival has been held for about a decade, museum curator Bonnie Haskell said there will be a lot of new offerings this year, including more vendors and additional children's activities.

"We always try to look for new things every year to try to add to it," Haskell said. "We've got a lot more things going on this year, so we're just praying for good weather."

On both Saturday and Sunday, children will have a chance to participate in a new scavenger hunt as well as "Pumpkin Pitch," a game where children can try and throw balls resembling pumpkins through basketball hoops. If they succeed, they win a free pumpkin.

Also new this year, draft horses will be on site to show visitors around the farm grounds via hayride throughout the festival. Then, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, 4-H miniature ponies will pay a visit to festivalgoers.

Along with the festival's new offerings will be its other annual attractions as well, including a crafter and flea market section.

However, this year, Haskell said, there will be "a lot more people. The inside is totally full of vendors."

Vendors will be selling everything from jewelry (new, vintage and handcrafted), to country-themed crafts, candles and even homemade jellies and jams. In other words, "Quite an eclectic mix," Haskell said.

The Sanborn Business and Professional Association will be cooking up hamburgers and hot dogs outdoors and museum representatives will hold a luncheon along with their peach short cake.

A basket auction will be offered and proceeds generated will help fund the upcoming Christmas at the Farm event for children, which is set to take place Dec. 10-11.

Those who wish to donate baskets for the festival are encouraged to bring them by the museum any day before the event. Anyone who donates a basket will receive a free sheet of tickets valued at $5.

Overall, Haskell said events such as the Autumn Fest "bring tourism into our community. You know, we're a small community. ... So, any time we can have an event to bring tourism into our community is a good thing. I mean, it will be a great weekend for the stores, for all the business, because people will be up and down those streets shopping. ... Everybody benefits from it."
