Annual 'World Pumpkin Weigh-off' highlights 21st annual Fall Festival at Great Pumpkin Farm in Clarence

Entrants can win cash prizes, including $10,000 for a world-record-setting pumpkin

While this summer's drought conditions may have hindered many crops, there appears to be a bumper crop of pumpkins here in Western New York this fall - and some of the area's largest pumpkins will be at the Great Pumpkin Farm this weekend. The annual "World Pumpkin Weigh-off" will be held beginning at noon on Sunday, Oct. 2.

Will the winning pumpkin beat last year's winning entry, submitted by Karl Haist of Clarence Center, and weighing in at 1,781.5 pounds? Will one of the entries be large enough to set a world record - and take home a $10,000 cash prize?

The Great Pumpkin Farm had the first 1,000-pound pumpkin at the 1996 Great Pumpkin Farm Fall Festival - 1,061 pounds - and it went right into the Guinness Book of World Records.

Winners will be announced as soon as all entries are officially weighed in at the Great Pumpkin Farm. The owner of the largest pumpkin at the "World Pumpkin Weigh-off" will take home the top prize of $5,000, with the chance to win twice that amount and earn a world record if his or her pumpkin weighs over 2,000 pounds. Cash prizes will also be awarded for second- through sixth-place.

Also this weekend, Nickel City Reptiles and Exotics will present an exclusive one-hour show beginning at 2:30 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday. Festival guests can also see a demonstration by the Erie County Sheriff's Department K9 Corp. both days at 1, 2 and 3 p.m. All of these shows are included with the price of admission to the festival.
