The 19th annual "Kidz 'N' Kites" took place last Saturday in Veterans Memorial Community Park. Despite a rainy forecast, the event attracted roughly 1,300 people with approximately 500 youth included.

"Come fly with us in celebration of youth" was the theme at this year's event, which featured balloon-making, face-painting, music and several other family-friendly activities.

"Our many vendors provided both fun events and informative information for our attendees," Niagara County Youth Bureau Director Meghan Lutz said.

She added, "Thanks to our many sponsors, including our 'Gold Flyer' sponsors Fidelis and the Kiwanis Club of Lewiston, we were able to once again make this a free event for youth and families."

Members of the Niagara Police Athletic League cooked up Sahlen's hot dogs for a free lunch for children and the Niagara County Sheriff's Office provided car seat safety checks.

In addition, a D.A.R.E. officer from the department "shared information to youth about preventing drug abuse and making good decisions," Lutz said.

Lutz said she was thankful to the Town of Niagara for their partnership and the many volunteers.

Next year, the "Kidz 'N' Kites" event is slated to be held Saturday, Sept. 16.
