Congressman Chris Collins, R-NY-27, announced the application period for the Assistance to Firefighter Grant Program for fiscal year 2016. Administered through the Federal Emergency Management Agency each year, the AFG Program is designed to help local fire departments and emergency management service providers improve their capability to respond to fires and emergencies of all types.

The AFG Program provides direct funding assistance to first-responder organizations to obtain much-needed emergency response equipment, personal protective equipment, firefighting and emergency vehicles, and training resources. This year alone, 13 departments throughout NY-27 have been awarded roughly $1,275,900 in federal funding assistance through the program.

"This prudent use of federal tax dollars will ensure the continued safety of our first responders and the communities they protect," Collins said. "I look forward to working with this year's applicants, and I encourage all NY-27 fire departments and EMS providers to apply."

FEMA will begin accepting applications from eligible departments beginning Tuesday, Oct. 11, at 8 a.m. Applications must be submitted by Friday, Nov. 18, at 5 p.m.

Interested applicants with further questions, or those seeking letters of support from Collins, are asked to call his Geneseo district office at 585-519-4002.
