Cheryl Cardone will serve as interim principal at Grand Island High School.

The Grand Island Board of Education appointed Cardone to the position during its meeting Monday in the Professional Development Room at GIHS. Cardone is the district's director of pupil personnel services and has frequently filled in for the district when building administration jobs open up.

"Cheryl has stepped up to be the interim principal at our high school," Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian Graham told the board. "We're very, very blessed to have you, Cheryl, working with us. You've done this work several times in the district, at the middle school, at the high school, at an elementary school, and those skills are valued and we're grateful for your services."

Cardone fills in as the district looks to replace former high school principal Dan Quartley, who took a job with the school district in Bolivar.

The board also appointed another familiar face to fill in at the high school: Matt McKenna will serve as interim assistant principal.

Graham thanked McKenna for helping the district as an interim assistant principal last year at Connor Middle School, and as interim principal at the middle school until John Fitzpatrick returned at the end of the school year. He will be an interim assistant principal in the high school as well, replacing Corey Gray.

Graham thanked Assistant Principal Corey Gray and technology teacher Jonathan Shelley, who are leaving the district.

"We've been very fortunate to have their skills and expertise in our district for a few years and they will be missed," Graham said.
