A church group from St. Martin-in-the-Fields Episcopal Church this week visited the memorial in Normandy dedicated to Island native Charles DeGlopper.

While on a pilgrimage to France, a St. Martin's youth group, its leadership, and a sister group from St. Mark Episcopal Church of Orchard Park, visited the memorial to the World War II hero who posthumously received the Congressional Medal of Honor in 1946 for his actions in the D-Day invasion.

The group began its pilgrimage Friday, July 15, and made a visit Tuesday to Normandy with plans to see the DeGlopper memorial and the Allied cemetery, where troops who died in the invasion are buried. Before visiting Normandy, the group stopped in Paris Saturday and Sunday with the itinerary calling stops at Notre Dame Cathedral and Mont Saint-Michel, as well as the Seine and the catacombs under the city.
