Just because school will be in and summer will soon be out, doesn't mean that outdoor fun is grounded.

The 19th annual "Kidz 'N' Kites" will take off Saturday, Sept. 17, in Veterans Memorial Community Park for a day of kite flying and fun for the entire family. Registration begins at 11 a.m. and the first 1,000 children through the gates will receive a free event T-shirt, kite, hot dog lunch and a ticket for the prize drawing. All activities will run noon until 2 p.m.

The public is reminded that there will be no rain date this year.

"Come fly with us in celebration of youth" is the theme that has continued through the years, as families enjoy sports, fun, food and learning at the free event.

Thanks to the donations of the event's sponsors, children and their parents can take part in balloon-making, face-painting, a car seat safety check and enjoy a kite-flying demo, the Niagara Falls Police Department command center, animal and wildlife rescue groups, the Niagara Falls Fire Department fire house and animals from the Niagara County SPCA. Providing the background atmosphere will be music by DJ the Dee Jay.

The festivities are capped off by the comic juggling of Injest.com, drawings for many donated prizes, as well as award presentations.

Sponsors include WKBW-TV Channel 7, Fidelis Care and the Kiwanis Club of Lewiston. Event chairman this year is Aaron Mentkowski, WKBW chief meteorologist. Assisting with the setup, registration and cleanup are dozens of volunteers from the Niagara County Department of Social Services, Niagara County Sheriffs Office and Niagara County Youth Bureau.

Also sponsoring the event are the NCSO D.A.R.E. program, Niagara PAL, the Town of Niagara, Jonathan "J-Mill" Miller Memorial Fund, Berkshire Farms, Grigg-Lewis Foundation, VenTek Inc., M&T Bank, Niagara-Orleans Central Labor Council, Niagara-Choice Federal Credit Union, Modern Disposal, Elks Lodge 346, Seneca Gaming Corp. Catholic Charities, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 237, Sahlen's, Fresh Bake, Reid's Drive-In, Mighty Taco and Wegmans.

Veterans Memorial Community Park is located at 7000 Lockport Road, Town of Niagara. More information is available at 716-278-6872.
