Sheriff warns residents after series of burglaries, car larcenies

Erie County Sheriff Timothy B. Howard is warning residents of Grand Island to secure their residences and vehicles after a string of break-ins over a 24-hour period.

Tuesday, and through the overnight hours, deputies and detectives have responded to multiple calls on Harvey Road, Grand Island Boulevard, First Street and Center Terrace for car larcenies and home burglaries. The subjects took laptops, cash, credit cards, electronics and personal items.

In the car larceny incidents, the victims' vehicles were unlocked and items were taken at various times throughout the day. One of the burglaries entailed the subject or subjects removing a window air conditioning unit to gain access to the residence.

The Erie County Sheriff's Office believes a white pickup truck with a loud muffler and possibly multiple occupants may be associated with these incidents and urges residents with information about the truck or the incidents to contact the Erie County Sheriff's Office at 858-2903.

Howard reminds residents to remove any item of value from their vehicle and to always lock the vehicle. In the past, subjects in similar incidents were stealing as little as a few dollars in change. By removing valuables and locking vehicles, individuals reduce the risk of the vehicles being broken into. Additionally, residents should take measures to secure all access points to their dwellings by locking doors and windows.
