Community Papers of Western New York announced Monday that its local newspapers would cease publishing, as the parent company shuts its doors.

Previously known as Metro Community Newspapers, Community Papers published the Lockport Star, City of Tonawanda Sun and Hamburg Sun, as well as papers serving the Tonawandas, Kenmore, Lockport, Clarence, Orchard Park, Cheektowaga and West Seneca. Publisher James C. Austin notified staffers of the company's closing.

Niagara Frontier Publications' Skip and Judy Mazenauer, publishers of weekly newspapers the Lewiston-Porter Sentinel, Niagara-Wheatfield-NT Tribune, Grand Island PennySaver and Island Dispatch, said they were "disheartened" to hear Community Newspapers was closing. After more than 60 years in the print industry, the Mazenauers said it's still their belief newspapers are the most trustworthy and optimal way of disseminating information to the public.

They pledged to provide assistance to the readers and advertisers affected by the untimely closing of Community Papers.

"Niagara Frontier Publications is here to assist," Skip Mazenauer said.

Organizations are welcome to submit their information to the print newspapers, or for the NFP website, www.wnypapers.com, which serves the entire region. Advertisers are invited to take advantage of NFP's summer specials, and to place their message in this area's largest-circulation products. Former Community Papers staffers are encouraged to submit a resume to[email protected].
