Niagara Falls attorney John J. DelMonte recently announced his candidacy to run for State Supreme Court justice in the eight counties of Western New York that make up the 8th Judicial District. There are two open Supreme Court seats to be filled in the Nov. 8 election.

DelMonte is a lifelong Democrat who will seek the nomination of the Democratic Party, along with the endorsement and support of the Conservative, Independence and Working Families parties. He has been an attorney in private practice for more than 36 years, representing thousands of clients in a wide variety of cases regularly litigated in State Supreme Court.

DelMonte was a Supreme Court candidate in 2014 when four of five seats filled that year went to cross-endorsed candidates.

"The 2014 race was one of the most rewarding professional experiences in my career as an attorney," DelMonte said. "The reservoir of support and goodwill I received from so many people during that election, particularly from the legal communities in Niagara and Erie counties, provides great encouragement to make this run again. I enjoy the practice of law and helping clients in resolving their day-to-day legal challenges. But throughout the course of running to become a judge in 2014, I became very comfortable with the opportunity of transferring my practical knowledge and experience as a lawyer to public service as a judge."

Niagara County Democratic Chairman Nicholas Forster expressed support for DelMonte noting his strong effort in 2014, and emphasizing the need to put respected attorneys who practice outside Erie County on the bench.

"John's had a successful legal career and is universally well-regarded throughout the community of Niagara Falls and the surrounding area," Forster said. "His peers in the Niagara County and Erie County bar associations rated his qualifications for Supreme Court Judge in 2014 as 'Superior' and 'Well-Qualified,' respectively, and we're very pleased to see him run again. He's earned it."

Forster also noted Democratic Party chairs in several of the surrounding counties have also expressed their continuing support for DelMonte this year.

DelMonte formerly served on the 8th Judicial District Grievance Committee and is a past commercial and lemon law arbitrator. He is currently a member of the NYS Trial Lawyers Association, New York State Bar Association and Erie County Bar Association. He serves on the Niagara County Bar Association's board of directors.

DelMonte is married and the father of two children.
