The final steps in North Tonawanda's Gratwick Riverside Park Marina renovations project are good to go.

The Common Council unanimously approved the award of the contract at Tuesday night's short meeting at City Hall.

The award will add approximately 80 new boat docks to the marina, according to City Engineer Dale Marshall, who added the plan will enhance the peninsula, as well. The bid was awarded to Pinto Construction Services at $867,122, which Marshall noted was under budget.

"The good news is this is the sixth and final phase," Marshall said, "And the contractor that we have, Pinto, has been the low-bidder or the subcontractor throughout. We can't be any happier with the bid."

The construction for the final part of the project is expected to begin sometime in August.

The approval headlined the meeting, which lasted just 13 minutes with Canal Fest in full swing. The meeting began at 5 p.m. instead of the usual 6:30 p.m. start. There were no public participation sessions and only a handful of residents were in attendance, and there were no final statements made by council members at the meeting.

Also on Tuesday night, the Common Council approved the appointment of Rae Proefrock to the Historic Preservation Committee. Mayor Arthur G. Pappas also read a proclamation to Proefrock honoring the 100th year anniversary of the Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum.

"The perseverance, the work, the sweat, I don't know how you did it. But all the work you did in the community - not just with the carousel, but the carousel is a main thing - but you've practically devoted an entire lifetime and we're certainly very grateful to you," Pappas said.

The Common Council also approved the award of a bid of $365,250 to STC Construction for the new mechanical bar screen at the wastewater treatment plant.

The next regular meeting is set for Aug. 2 back at City Hall at the regular time of 6:30 p.m.
