The Niagara County Legislature's top social services program watchdog hailed today's opening of summer lunch sites around the county, where youth will be able to obtain free breakfast and lunch meals throughout the summer.
Legislator Rich Andres, R-North Tonawanda, called the program "a needed safety net for children that ensures hunger doesn't delay development, and that the end of the school year doesn't entail hardship."
In a release issued earlier by the Niagara County Youth Bureau, program administrators noted, "The program ensures that children who are economically disadvantaged continue to receive nutritious meals during summer vacation. Meals are comparable to the National School Breakfast and National School Lunch Programs (served) throughout the school year."
Meal sites will serve meals Monday through Friday starting today and throughout the summer. Approved sites serving meals under the federally funded program are located in areas deemed to have significant concentrations of low-income children. Children age 18 and under are eligible for the nutrition program.
Meal sites are as follows:
•Lockport: Altro Park, Dolan Park, Lockport Salvation Army, Outwater Park
•Niagara Falls: 91st Street Playground, Center Court (D'Amelio Park), Gill Creek Playground, Gluck Park, Hyde Park Playground, Liberty Park, Lockport Park, Niagara Falls High School, South Junior Park, Stephenson Avenue Playground, The Salvation Army
•North Tonawanda: Payne Park
