Greenway signage offers history lesson

Sat, Jun 25th 2016 07:00 am

City of Tonawanda Mayor Rick Davis hosted an unveiling ceremony of the Niagara River/Erie Canal Signage Expansion Project, Erie County-Tonawanda section, on May 11 in the Niawanda Park Pavilion.

Facsimiles of eight historical signs were on display. One of the signs described the ferry to Grand Island. The actual installed panels will be viewable along the Shoreline Trail (Riverwalk) at various points between Two Mile Creek and the Canal/Swing Bridge area.

Funding for this project was made possible by a grant from the Niagara River Greenway Commission. Members of the Historical Society of the Tonawandas created the panels in conjunction with the design staff at ASI Signage of Grand Island. Similar signage for North Tonawanda is in the works and should be ready for installation by the end of the year.
