Volunteers clean up Staley Road

Thermo Fisher Scientific and town agree on Adopt-A-Highway program

A volunteer group from Thermo Fisher Scientific cleaned up Staley Road as part of a newly created Adopt-A-Highway program with the Town of Grand Island.

Early in the morning June 10, volunteers from the company collected more than 19 bags of garbage and large pieces of trash along a 3.6-mile stretch of Staley Road from the roundabout at the intersection of Grand Island Boulevard to West River Road.

Now in their 11th year of cleaning up Staley Road, Thermo Fisher volunteers were taking part in the company's Global Volunteer Clean Up Day program. The 2016 cleanup was highlighted by newly signed Adopt-A-Highway agreement between Thermo Fisher and the Town of Grand Island.

According to Joseph A. Menter, recreation supervisor for the Town of Grand Island, Thermo Fisher volunteers have been performing this cleanup work for years every June, and last year Thermo Fisher group leader Chad Cowell inquired about adopting and doing more to clean up Staley Road, where the company is located. Menter contacted Highway Superintendent JT Tomkins and Deputy Superintendent Dick Crawford, and Cowell and colleague Andrew Tucker from Thermo Fisher worked with all parties to finalize an agreement that took place in time for Thermo Fisher to start work June 10.

As part of the agreement two Adopt-A-Highway signs with the Thermo Fisher Scientific name will be placed on Staley Road, one facing eastbound traffic and one facing westbound traffic.

The Adopt-A-Highway program is available for town-owned roads and is designed for groups to "conduct activities at a frequency which will enhance the attainment of the goal, which is to provide a clean and healthy appearance along and within the adopted roadway." Under the agreement, Thermo Fisher will now clean Staley Road at least two times a year, once between March 1 and July 31 and again between Aug. 1 and Oct. 31.

As part of the agreement, Adopt-A-Park is also available. Contact the town's Highway, Recreation or Parks departments with inquiries about adopting a highway or park.
