Oakwood Cemetery unveils community honorees

On Saturday, June 11, the Oakwood Cemetery at 763 Portage Road unveiled the newest honorees of its Notable Persons recognition program. This year, the Hon. Augustus Porter, Sgt. Edward Sarsnett and Lillian Garabedian have been named the honorees. Each year, six nominees are chosen from the 25,000 residents of Oakwood who have made a significant contribution to the area in their lifetime.

The nominees are selected based on six categories, including artists, military, civil, humanitarians, falls/river and human interest. Of these, the top three nominees based on the most votes are honored.

The event is sponsored by The Niagara Falls National Heritage Area, which provided funds for three cast aluminum signs and posts, along with installation.

The group also paid for the production of a brochure/map, designed by Liz Hare, a Whitney family descendant. The brochure/map indicates the locations of the past 22 honorees, along with a brief biography of each of them. Eventually, there will be 48 signs, eight in each of the six categories throughout the 20-acre site.

Brochures are available at the cemetery office from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays for self-guided tours.
