Grand Island Lions Club: Peace Poster Contest winners honored

Sat, Jun 4th 2016 07:00 am

The May 25 Grand Island Lions Club meeting was held in honor of the winners in the 2015-16 Peace Poster Contest. The theme for the contest was "Share Peace."

The objective of the contest is to allow these young people from ages 11-13 to think about and express their thoughts of peace through artistic interpretation. The Lions hope these expressions of peace will help these young people develop greater tolerance for others and better international understanding. Their creative artwork expresses what peace means to them.

Pictured is T.J. Bender from the Connor Middle School, with his first-place peace poster along with his parents, Jennifer and Jonathan Bender. Bender, who received a $100 award, did a brief "show-and-tell" of his winning peace poster and explained what peace means to him. Lion Paul Bassette, the Peace Poster Contest chairman, is pictured on the left. The second-place winner of a $50 award was Hailey Watches from Connor Middle School with her poster at the right. The posters will be displayed for one year at the Grand Island Memorial Library.

The Lions have conducted the Peace Poster Contest for the last 28 years. District-level winners go on to the state level. There were 52 posters submitted this year. The judging criteria are based on use of theme, artistic ability and originality.
