Help Niagara County Peach Queen 'kiss cancer goodbye'

Every year the Niagara County Peach Queen, sponsored by the Lewiston Kiwanis Club, chooses an organization that has a very special meaning to her and organizes a fundraiser where all of the proceeds go to that organization.

When making that decision, I knew I wanted the organization or foundation I chose to have to do with cancer. In my life, many people close to me were affected by cancer, including my mother. Doing research, I came upon an organization that looked perfect. The name of the organization is "Gotta Kiss Cancer Goodbye," which really stands out to me and makes me extremely excited to work with them.

When my mom was diagnosed with multiple myeloma cancer in 2014, my family's lives completely changed. Being a senior in high school at the time, I had a lot of planning to do, which was hard to accomplish with my mom not being well. As well as for my parent's business, Sandi's Family Restaurant, my family and I had to do a lot more work to make up for her not being around. It was a long, hard road, but we got through it and, thankfully, my mother is doing better now.

Being the Peach Queen gives me the opportunity to help out in a way I have never dreamed I could before.

Gotta Kiss Cancer Goodbye is a wonderful nonprofit organization whose founder is also a survivor. This independent community organization serves to raise awareness of cancer and pay it forward to the cancer community. GKCG provides education through collaboration with other organizations to help identify and address cancer issues through patient support service, research and advocacy programs.

Funds raised by the organization will go toward improving the quality of life of cancer patients and their families, and reducing the stress associated with treatment by providing emotional support and financial assistance to patients and their families who are battling, and life-saving research. I wish I would've known about this amazing program while my mom was going through her treatment.

Because I love all that GKCG has to offer, I will be holding a fundraiser where all proceeds will be going to their efforts in the cancer community. The fundraiser will be held on Sunday July 17, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Wheatfield Community Center, 2800 Church St., Wheatfield. Tickets are $20 adults and $15 for students. A ticket includes lunch, provided by Chiavetta's, a basket raffle and 50/50 auction. There will be music for entertainment.

Donations of any size are greatly appreciated. I am very excited for this event.
