Lewiston Lions Club offers $500 scholarship

The Lewiston Community Lion's Club is offering a $500 scholarship for a Native American graduating high school senior who resides on the Tuscarora Nation, and displays a commitment and dedication to his or her education.

Qualifying Native American students must attend either Niagara-Wheatfield High School or the Tuscarora Indian School, and continue on to higher education. Tuscarora Indian School graduates will be given preference.

Per the Tuscarora Home School Council, qualifying students must be college/vocational/technical school-bound or continuing their education; have earned at least a 3.0 grade-point average; have participated in school activities and/or athletics, as well as community activities.

Applications are currently available at the guidance office at Niagara-Wheatfield High School or the Tuscarora school, and must be submitted by Monday, June 6.

Tuscarora Princess speaks to Lewiston Lions

The Lewiston Lions recently had a special visit from Tuscarora Princess Jazlin Kirkland, who just returned from the largest pow wow in North America. Jazlin was able to travel to "The Gathering of Nations" held in Albuquerque. With thousands of people in attendance from all over the world, this was the largest gathering of tribal royalty. Jazlin was included in the grand entry.

"It's hard to believe that, before last year, I've never been outside of New York, and now I have traveled to New Mexico, North Carolina, Wisconsin and throughout Canada," Jazlin said.

Jazlin is also known as Yeho Kye'nha, in her native language, which translates into "she fights for it." Her main goal as Tuscarora Princess is to be a true ambassador for her nation wherever she travels.

The Lewiston Lions were happy to contribute $250 toward traveling expenses to The Gathering of Nations, so Jazlin could participate in this rare opportunity.

"We wish her well finishing up her reign as Tuscarora Princess, and best of luck as she enters her senior year at Niagara-Wheatfield High School in the fall 2016, and beyond," President Regina Cecconi said.
