The Lewiston Community Lions will sponsor free youth eye screenings, with the assistance of the Town of Niagara Lions, during Monday's luncheon at the Lewiston No. 1 Volunteer Fire Co. firehall on North Sixth Street. The event immediately follows the Memorial Day parade and ceremony.

The Lions use a specialized, no flash-digital camera, which can detect up to 13 different abnormalities in less than 60 seconds, immediately letting parents know if a child needs to be seen by a doctor.

The Welch Allyn Spot Vision Screener is a handheld, portable camera device designed to help users quickly and easily detect vision issues on patients from 6 months of age through adult. The device screens both eyes at once from a nonthreatening 3-foot distance. The touch-screen display allows for one-touch activation, simple management of patient data entry, and easy configuration for the vision screening.

"Local schools do not offer this service, nor do they have the technology available to do so," said Lewiston Community Lions President Regina Cecconi. "It only takes a minute. Why chance your child's vision?

"The good news is that we are currently working with area educational and public leaders to bring the 'Lions See' program of specialized eye screenings throughout Niagara County. Every Lions Club in our 20N district, with a vision screener, are already scheduled to perform eye screening in the Buffalo school district come fall 2016."
