Lockside Art Center, as part of its community service programs, presents the "Safety and Health in the Art Studio" workshop, a six-hour training session for area artists, art teachers and students. The event runs from 6-9 p.m. Mondays, May 16 and 23, in Lockport.

This free workshop explores the common health and safety problems in art studios and classrooms. Instructors will cover regulations and recommendations on chemical exposure, the routes of exposure to chemicals, and protection and prevention for reducing or eliminating hazards using the hierarchy of controls. Hazards, protection and prevention will be reviewed for arts/materials including: paints and solvents, sealants, adhesives and glues, charcoal and pastels, photography, ceramics and glazes, sculptures (casts, resins, plaster of Paris), and dyes and mordants.

This is a sequence of two classes. A participation certificate will be given to those who complete both sessions. The center is located at 21 Main St., at Pine Street (Lockview Plaza), second floor Suite 208. Parking is available behind the building (enter off Pine Street). Light refreshments will be served compliments of Lockside Art Center.

Nellie Brown and Nona McQuay will conduct the session. Brown, a certified industrial hygienist, is associated with The Worker Institute at Cornell University, director for the workplace health and safety program and a lead programs manager with the Industrial and Labor Relations School. McQuay is a board member of Lockside Art Center, a retired health and safety specialist, museum curator, and president of the Niagara Arts Guild.

This program is sponsored by the Western New York Council on Occupational Safety and Health (WNYCOSH), a nonprofit training and education organization advocating for healthy and safe working conditions for all workers.

RSVP to Kevin Gaskill (716-628-1375) by May 11 to confirm your attendance.
