Stroke strikes someone in the U.S. every 40 seconds. On May 4, Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center will make a major effort to keep area residents from inflating that statistic.

"Stroke and Stress: The Holistic Approach," will bring together experts determined to educate the community on the prevention, detection and treatment of stroke.

The free American Stroke Month event will be held from 1-4 p.m. in the medical center's auditorium. Presenters will include Stroke Center Medical Director Nyathappa Anand, M.D., whose topic will be "Stroke: Time Lost is Brain Lost" and Nurse Practitioner Kathleen Ventry who will address "The Connection Between Diabetes & Stroke." There also will be words of hope from a stroke survivor.

The event will offer free diagnostic health screenings for stroke and high blood pressure along with body mass index (BMI) measurement, rhythm strip EKGs and carotid artery screening. Interactive wellness displays and vendors also will be on hand.

Refreshments will be served. For more information, call 716-278-4569 or visit www.NFMMC.org.
