Congressman Brian Higgins announced the application window for grants provided through the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Services (SAFER) program is now open.

"The SAFER program can provide local departments with additional resources to assist with recruitment and retention efforts, ultimately strengthening the response to emergency situations," Higgins said. "We encourage Western New York fire companies to apply."

SAFER grants are aimed at increasing the number of firefighters and enhancing a department's ability to comply with federal standards to ensure their communities have adequate protection from fire and fire-related hazards. This year, Congress appropriated $340 million for the SAFER Program. All applications are due before the application period closes at 5 p.m. on March 25.

A number of tools are available to applicants through the federal fire grant website: www.fema.gov/firegrants. Applicants with additional questions may also contact the SAFER program help desk by calling 1-866-274-0960, or via email at [email protected].
